Industrial-Eclectic, Bold & Dramatic
Lahaina, Maui, HI
Project Powerhouse set out to do something most commercial gyms never attempt: make working out feel like a wild night out. Commissioned as a ground-up buildout of a 5,000 square foot fitness club in Lahaina, the brief was funky, rock-and-roll energy. The intended mood was vibrant, unique, and memorable, built to compete with top-tier mainland gyms and designed to turn local visitors into daily regulars asking for more.
Kate Killeen Design layered an industrial aesthetic — exposed ducting, moody textures, knock-out designer tile — with an eclectic, saturated palette of blues, coppers, blacks, and greens. Storage was engineered into every available inch, the neon lighting plan was rebuilt from the studs up, and finishes were chosen for durability as much as personality. Every sightline was treated as a design opportunity. Because in a space this active, the decor has to work as hard as the members do.
But here is the best: This gym is not only a showpiece destination on Maui, but it is a beacon of home for the community after the 2023 wildfires, which left thousands without jobs or homes. Maui Powerhouse Gym Lahaina is the first commercial build since the disaster and will remain a symbol of new beginnings for the community.
The result is a gym that not only looks beautifully stunning — it feels like home to the deserving people of Lahaina.
